Founded in 1683 by King Charles I as a food market for London’s burgeoning population, Spitalfields today trades in much more eclectic and exciting merchandise than the "flesh, fowl, and roots" originally permitted (though it still retains a great organic veg section). The best bit of the market is sheltered in a striking Victorian market hall: here you’ll find everyone from fashion grads peddling their newly stitched wares to eccentric curio vendors and fresh-from-farm country folk hawking organic snacks. Recent renewal in the area has brought chichi cafes and upscale brands, though the heart of the market is still the bustling trader stalls.

WHY WE LIKE IT
We love it on Sundays when all the stalls are open–there are treasures to be had if you have time for browsing and bargaining your way through the teeming crowds. We also really like the (much quieter) art and fashion market on Fridays; it’s a great spot to pick up cool pieces by aspiring young designers.
GOOD TO KNOW
The market varies by day (Thursdays are for antiques, Fridays for fashion, etc.), so plan ahead to make sure you’re hitting the best day for what you’re looking for. If you want to see it all, go on a Sunday when every stall and every shop is open. If you’re into records, try to get there on the first and third Wednesday of every month, when there’s a special vintage vinyl and disc fair.
